I could not tell you
How we met,
The last thing I remember,
I was hoping to forget;
Then, footsteps behind me,
A sound indirect,
There stood Emily, so relaxed,
Like there was nothing to protect;
Emily,
What can it be?
If you only knew,
You would not do the things you do;
Eyes as wide
As the buttermilk skies,
Surely hands gentle as those
Could not be dealing in lies;
She makes you feel tall,
Like the sun in the trees,
But the bruises remind you,
She’s got you on your knees;
Emily,
What can it be?
Surely if you knew
You could not do the things you do;
Smiles like an angel,
Steals like a thief,
Tells you that she loves you,
But the words bring no relief;
And just when you think,
She might have made you a place,
The smoke’s cleared and she’s disappeared,
Gone without a trace;
People look at me sadly,
As they pass me by,
But they’ve never seen the world
In the light of Emily’s lies.
To be released on an upcoming album
